The E65 motorway is a major development project and an environmental project, which when completed will be part of the wider interconnection of Greece with Europe, while in our country it will be a "link" with other highways and roads.
Η σύμβαση για την κατασκευή του Βορείου τμήματος του οδικού άξονα Ε65 υπεγράφη στο υπουργείο Υποδομών και Μεταφορών, and is part of the major highway of Central Greece implemented by GEK TERNA.
The signing took place in the presence of the Secretary General of Infrastructure, K. George Karagiannis and the President and CEO of GEK TERNA Group, K. George Peristeri.
The construction of this emblematic work therefore begins, which will connect Athens with Western Macedonia, but also with Italy through the Port of Igoumenitsa, as well as with the Western Balkans and from there, with central and northern Europe. With the completion of E65 the journey from Lamia to Egnatia will take one hour and thirty minutes, instead of two hours and thirty minutes, required today.
The implementation of the Northern Section of the E65 is also perhaps the most substantial action to support Western Macedonia in the critical period of de-ligation. And this as a young man, modern road and the upgrading of the connection of Western Macedonia with Athens and Central Greece, means supporting in practice companies already operating in the region and attracting new investment. In a few words, with the E65 whole areas will come out of isolation.
It is reminded that after methodical work on 18 months, without big words and with repeated contacts with the European Commission, the Government has managed to get the green light that the project is compatible with Community law. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport proceeded with all the necessary actions, but there was also a personal intervention of the Prime Minister, K. Kyriakou Mitsotaki, to the European Commission.
"Works do not grow overnight. And such is the nature of the object, that you can work hard for a long time and this job does not appear ", pointed out Mr.. Karamanlis during the signing ceremony, emphasizing that here and 23 months of systematic work, which today bears fruit. "We have developed a comprehensive project program throughout the country, total height over 13 billion. euro", reminded and pointed out that this program includes important new projects, but it also includes emblematic works, that for years had stuck and too many had "written off".
"The 2021 is the year we unblock these projects one by one ", stressed the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport and added: "Day before yesterday, we signed the contract for the line 4 of the Athens Metro. Today, we sign for the Northern Section of E65. In both works, within the year we will see construction sites. I believe that the same will happen on the other long-suffering road axis, Patras - Tower. We are entering, also, in the final straight for the Thessaloniki Metro. While we have also made jumps on the North Road of Crete, which we also recently presented with the Prime Minister ".
Mr.. Karamanlis pointed out that: "The signing of the contract is a defining milestone for any major project - especially if it has already gone through a thousand waves.. This is because it practically means that we are now entering the construction phase of the project ".
He described E65 as a great project, first of all, because it is the project that largely completes the national road network, since this is the section of E65 that connects the Egnatia Odos with the National Athens - Thessaloniki.
"What it means, Well, in practice this work;
It means fast and above all safe transportation.
It means competitive, but also environmentally friendly, traffic from Athens to Western Macedonia and the corresponding connections with Italy (through the Port of Igoumenitsa), the Western Balkans and through them to Central and Northern Europe. It involves substantial reinforcement, that is,, of the international position of our country as an infrastructure hub of the wider region.
Means, also, support in practice - and not just in words- in Western Macedonia, during the critical period of de-lignification ", also stated the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport.
He explained that the development of the connectivity of Western Macedonia with Athens and Central Greece will enhance the development of the region., the modernization and streamlining of the operation of the companies operating in the area. And the most important, will facilitate and encourage new companies to settle in the area, creating new jobs and reducing the effects of unemployment.
"In a few words, The new road means development and new opportunities for all the areas it passes through, while of course it is absolutely environmentally friendly ", concluded Mr.. Karamanlis.
Mr.. Karagiannis, for his part, stated:
"The construction of the Northern Section of the E65 together with its Southern section, moving at a rapid pace, will complete the highway, joining two main roads, that is,, Egnatia Odos with PATHE.
It is a work of length 70,5 kilometers, height 442 million, financed entirely by the newly established Recovery Fund.
So, in less than two years, we got after extensive negotiations with the EU. the green light for the project, We secured financing and today we are signing the contract with the concessionaire.
In three years from today, Northern Greece and especially Western Macedonia which in the post-lignite era is in great need, will have the path it needs to walk the path of growth with fast and steady steps ".
Mr.. George Peristeris, President and CEO of GEK TERNA Group, write down:
"On behalf of the GEK TERNA Group, I would like to express our great joy for the fact that a very important project for Greece is now entering the path of completion.. E65 is a project, the enormous importance of which will be seen when it is completed and put into operation in its entirety. Then it will prove in practice its key role for safer, faster and cheaper travel for large groups of our fellow citizens, who do not currently have access to a secure motorway network. From our side we are committed to do in this case as well, what we do over time and consistently. We will give our best and we will deliver a perfect work in time, working closely with relevant bodies and local communities ".
The history of the project
The E65 was designed as a new highway 181 kilometers, which connects the existing Athens - Thessaloniki highway (at the height of Lamia) with the Egnatia Odos.
It was one of five highways auctioned off under the Concession Agreement 2007. Due to the economic crisis in Greece, the 2011, it was decided, in consultation with the European Union, to implement the intermediate part of the highway (Xyniada - Trikala) length 77,5 kilometers, released in 2017, and postpone the construction of the other two sections (North and South).
Northern Section (Trikala - Egnatia)
With the construction of the northern part, length 70,5 km, E65 will be completed, joining two main roads, that is,, Egnatia Odos with PATHE.
The project has a budget 442 million euros and its construction is expected to be completed in three years.
The new highway will have two lanes per direction and LEA.
Specifically, they will be constructed:
- Two tunnels with a total length of 65m and 400m.
- Two tunnels with excavation and re-embankment ( Cut & Cover ) with a total length of 264m and 180m per direction.
– 31 bridges / overpasses.
- Six nodes (Vassiliki, Kalambaka, Grevena, Gumption, Agiofyllo - Carpero, Egnatia), while the Trikala junction will be completed.
- Two Operation and Maintenance centers (ΚΕΣ).
- A Frontal Toll Station (Gumption) and three side stations.
Parking and Rest areas will be constructed along the entire length of the project, as well as a new secondary road network (service and vertical axes) to serve neighboring areas.
Southern Section (Lamia - Xyniada)
The construction of the section Lamia - Xiniada, length 32,5 kilometers, started it 2018 and has been executed 63% of the project. The project started in December 2018 and will be completed 2022. The progress of the work is in 72% of the project and in fact in the coming days the first will be released 14 kilometers. The cost of the Southern Department is 300 million and is funded by the NSRF 2014-2020.
