"THE 13the October is a milestone for Grevena, reminding all of us of the end of the unbearable Ottoman occupation and the beginning of the independent historical course of our place.
The victorious advance of the Greek army in the northern parts of the territory and especially the victory at Sarandaporo were decisive for the declining presence of the Turkish forces in the area and their final erratic flight.. After centuries of slavery and subjugation, the city passed into the hands of its Greek inhabitants, thus paving the way for the union with the free Homeland..
And while for Grevena the beginning of the modern local history is defined by 13the October, for our collective national memory the 1821 marks in the most emblematic way the justification of the struggle and the sacrifice of our ancestors for the preservation of Greekness, of religion and deep faith in the ancient Greek values of freedom, equality and democracy.
So on the occasion of 109ων Eleftherion of the city we also participate in the national celebration of 200 years since the beginning of the Revolution believing in the dual function of anniversaries; on the one hand, a reminder of the achievements of the glorious past, on the other hand motivating us to realize our moral debt, we the descendants, to this great legacy we have received, our free homeland.
I wish warmly and from the bottom of my heart to all the women of Grevena and to all the people of Grevena Happy Birthday and paraphrasing Rigas, "To always think freely and well"!»
