At the age of just 36 years old "passed away" today Saturday 19 November 2022 the distinguished Grevenio pianist, George Karagiannis, defeated by terminal illness.
George Karagiannis, who had appeared giving individual recitals and chamber music concerts in cities and festivals in Greece and abroad, among them Germany, where he lived in recent years, Italy, Portugal, Bulgaria and Thailand, started piano lessons at age 11 years, in the city of Grevena, where he was born.
He had participated in many national and international piano competitions, where he had distinguished himself, while in his musical career he attended dozens of piano and chamber music seminars with internationally renowned Greek and foreign musicians such as: Donald Weilerstein, Maxim Mogilevsky, Aglika Genova & Liuben Dimitrov, Mikhail Voskresensky, Jerome Rose, Elizabeth Kufferath, Winfried Rademacher, Hideyo Harada, Kemal Gekic´, Reinhard Becker, Viktor Chuchkov, Ákos Hernádi, Eugene Mursky, Svetlana Smolina, John van Beek, Eduard Zilberkant, Domna Eunouhidou, Elena Mouzala, George Chatzinikos.
He graduated from 2009 from the Department of Music Studies of the Ionian University specializing in piano where he also did his master's degree, while after his introduction as 1st in the Konzertexamen sector (higher solo studies in Germany) he continued and completed his studies at the University of Trossingen (State University of Music Trossingen). Postgraduate studies in chamber music followed at the University of Hanover (University of Music, Theater and Media Hanover) and at the same time attended Lied accompaniment lessons.
He has recorded for the Third Program of ERT, playing with the modern music orchestra of Public Television and the symphony orchestra of the municipality of Thessaloniki, while he was also one of the founding members of the young metal rock band Dark Nightmare.
His health adventure began about two years ago with the diagnosis of a rare form of cancer, which he fought bravely, as he initially managed to deal with it and return to his favorite keys, even releasing an album. However, his health worsened at the end of the summer and he chose to return with his beloved violinist wife, Elisa van Beek in the city where she was born.
The funeral service will be held tomorrow, Sunday 20 November 2022 at 12 at noon in the Metropolitan Church of Grevena, Evangelist of the Theotokos.
