The government is considering a change of course and a return to diesel subsidies.
The backlash caused by the spike in the price of motor diesel after the end of the pump price subsidy, forced the government's finance staff to put the diesel subsidy back on the table .
At this stage the package under consideration will exceed the 400 per euro with the aim of limiting pressures on fuel prices. The first goal is the diesel subsidy, while there are also considerations for intervention in the heating allowance in order to extend the duration for which the measure will be in effect. At this stage it is unknown how long the diesel subsidy will last. Decisions will be made based on revenue trends, but also the course of budget execution in order to avoid budgetary deviations.
The priority of the government's financial staff is to restore the subsidy of 15 cents at the pump in order to hold down the price of diesel. The price subsidy was withdrawn last month and as of October 1 it has soared, surpassing even unleaded petrol. The latest figures from the Ministry of Development show that at average levels nationwide, the price of diesel has risen to 2,121 euros per liter, while gasoline is at 2,034 euro.
In addition to the increased costs for citizens' movements, the financial staff tries to limit the pass-through of costs to product prices.
At the same time, the temporal extension of the heating oil subsidy is also being considered, as the current validity of the measure ends at the end of the year and there are considerations to continue the subsidy for at least a quarter or even until April when the winter provision ends.
It should be noted that in the draft of the new budget there is a provision for a reserve 1 billion. euros to cover needs the 2023, of which 600 million concern exclusively the part of the subsidies. However, electricity subsidies are also included in this amount.
