"Premiere" today for the summer discounts, which will last until Tuesday, 31 August 2021.
The summer discounts, under the legislation, start on the second Monday in July, but this year because of the situation, Ministry of Development and Investment decides to start them early in an effort to stimulate trade.
The Regional Chamber Council of Attica informs commercial enterprises and consumers that on the first Sunday of discounts, 11 July, shops can be optionally open.
It still reminds, that when making discounts, in addition to the indication of the old and the new reduced price of the products sold at a discount, The indication and commercial communication of a discount rate is also allowed.
If a reduced price is provided in more than 60% of all items sold, the demonstration of the provided discount rate is required, so it should be listed on the store display and in any other commercial communication, while in case there are different discount rates per product categories, the range of the percentage provided should be indicated ("from …. % to…. %»). In any other case, it will be stated that the discounts apply to selected items with reference to the corresponding percentage.
The way in which the reduced price is calculated and displayed, it must be true and accurate. Shopkeepers should, in case of control, be able to prove, that the old sale price indicated on the plate, corresponds to reality. Special care is required during the period of regular discounts, as according to the current framework of par. 1 article 3 of the Ministerial Decision 56885/2014, when making discounts, except for the indication of the old and the new reduced price of the goods and services sold at a discount, the indication and commercial communication of a discount percentage is also allowed ".
In practice this means that the indication of old and new price is imperative, while the discount rate comes in addition to and not only. It has been observed, that business members, in good faith and in their attempt to avoid the relevant workload, do not indicate double prices on discounted products, but resort to the use of a generalized reduction rate. However, this practice is illegal and carries severe penalties. Caution is required by shopkeepers, to list first ap’ all the old and new price of the products and then a generalized discount rate.
According to the article 21 Law 4177/2013, those who violate the provisions on discounts will be fined an amount equal to 0,5% of annual turnover and not less than 5.000 euro. In case a fine is imposed for the second time for the same violation within a period 5 years, the fine is increased to 3% of the annual turnover of the company in question.
