So how can we all help this effort?; By adjusting the temperature of our air conditioner to 26 grades, by closing - as long as possible- electric water heaters especially at night between 7 and 10 and to limit consumption as much as possible. Turn off the lights especially at those hours.
We have, as the Minister said, the president of IPTO, the president of HEDNO, our regulator (RAE), consider all possible scenarios, we are ready to face this challenge as well. And with the help of consumers, we will succeed this time as well.
I would also like to personally thank all the executives who are involved in the production of electricity, the PPC executives, but also private producers, but also all the executives of the distribution from IPTO to HEDNO. I know that great efforts are being made every day to repair faults as a whole, The cumulative burden on the distribution of electricity with each passing day of heat is increasing. We will do everything, what is needed to ensure the safe electricity supply of the country, of households and businesses ", Kyriakos Mittotakis underlined.
The Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, stated: "Today we held a meeting under the supervision of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The crisis management team presented all the defense and response measures we have taken to deal with any - even unlikely- case it happens. We ask, because the country's electricity network is under pressure due to the very high demand since we are at the peak of the tourist season and we have more than 2-3 an additional millions of visitors to our country at the moment, we urge consumers not to waste energy they do not need. For example, they should not have unnecessary lights on, especially during critical hours, of the peak, between 6 afternoon and 10 evening. During that time, let them limit and do not turn on the electric water heaters. Limit the use of electrical appliances for cooking and of course adjust their air conditioners to a constant temperature in the 26 Celsius degrees, to have the best effect as a temperature inside the house, with the lowest possible electricity consumption ".
The President and CEO of IPTO, Manousos Manousakis, he stated: "We are living in a historic heatwave. As a result, we have a decade-long record in consumer demand, last Friday. It is possible that this record will be broken today and broken again tomorrow. So we all realize that the system is under pressure and we are here to declare readiness. We are constantly on top of things, in order to ensure the electrification of consumers, of the country's industries and citizens ".
The CEO of HEDNO, Anastasios Manos, he stressed: "Together in collaboration with RIS, with RAE, with IPTO and with the producers we are in coordination and on alert having revoked licenses and having put on alert all our staff, so that we can deal with these extreme weather events. Every effort is made, what damage occurs either due to heat, or because of fires, be repaired immediately so that citizens have direct access to electricity ".
The President of the Energy Regulatory Authority (RAE), Thanasis Dagoumas, he said: "They were examined by the crisis management team 48 scenarios in order to capture potential errors or chances of loss and in cooperation with the managers there is full readiness to address all issues. In the control room of the Independent Electricity Transmission Operator (IPTO), The Prime Minister was informed in detail about the emergency conditions prevailing throughout the country due to the prolonged heatwave, for the production of lignite plants, the production of gas stations, of hydroelectric power stations as well as RES.
Due to the very high temperatures in the following days, an increase in electricity consumption and pressure in the system is expected. For this reason, the coordination of the competent bodies and the generators at the highest level is imperative in order to ensure the uninterrupted supply of the consumers throughout the duration of the extreme phenomenon ".
They participated in the meeting the Minister of Environment and Energy Costas Skrekas, the Undersecretary despite the Prime Minister, Akis Skertsos, the President and CEO of IPTO, Manousos Manousakis, the CEO of HEDNO Anastasios Manos, the President of the Energy Regulatory Authority (RAE) Thanasis Dagoumas, the President and CEO of PPC, George Stassis, the Operation Director of the Energy Control Center, Vassilis Ziogas as well as representatives of electricity generation companies.
The extraordinary meeting was held to take the necessary measures by all stakeholders in order to ensure the adequacy of the electrical system and to identify measures for defense and response to emergencies and unexpected events.. "Conditions for the electrical system are unprecedented, as consumption in the coming days is expected to reach record levels due to extremely high temperatures. For this reason, the coordination of the competent bodies and the generators at the highest level is imperative in order to ensure the uninterrupted supply of consumers as’ the whole duration of the extreme phenomenon ", notes the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
He adds that due to the extreme climatic conditions of the last days and in view of the upcoming worsening of the heat, the citizens are asked, during peak hours 13:00-15:00 and 18:00-22:00 to:
- Avoid the use of electrifying devices (washing machine, oven, water heater etc.) and shift it to the other hours (off-peak).
- They regulate the temperature of the air conditioners in 26 grades.
- Do not forget the lights on in places they do not use and limit their use.
At the same time, an extraordinary meeting of the Crisis Management Team took place on Sunday (01/08) under the Minister of Environment and Energy, Costa Skreka, for the adequacy of the electrical system, as today is considered critical for the power system, since the prolonged heatwave and the increased demand test the production system, transmission and distribution of electricity. During the meeting, the Minister appealed to the citizens to reduce the unnecessary consumption of electricity for the next 24 hours., as the strengths of the system will be tested by particularly high temperatures.
The meeting was attended by the President of the Energy Regulatory Authority (RAE), Athanasios Dagoumas, the head of the Crisis Management Team and a member of the RAE Plenary Session, Dimitris Fourlaris and IPTO executives, of DESFA, of HEDNO, of PPC and electricity generators, while a relevant briefing of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection took place.
The representatives of the Administrators presented the measures they have taken in view of the next days and especially of today. IPTO informed about the load estimates of the electrical system, the availability of units, interfaces and equipment condition.
– Today is a crucial day as the total load of the system is estimated to rise to 8.700 – 8.800 MW about 14:00 and at 9,600MW at peak hours.
– Gas units are all available.
– Lignite plants are available with the exception of Megalopolis III and Agios Dimitrios V.
-From Saturday, 31 July, Meliti units have joined, Megalopolis IV and ‘Agios Dimitrios I-II-III-IV.
– Agios Dimitrios V is unavailable due to the construction of a new desulphurisation unit and the works are expected to be completed in October, while for Megalopolis III every possible effort will be made, in order to be available today.
– The role of interfaces is important for contributing to adequacy.
– Interfaces are available, with the exception of the Italian interconnection which will remain out of order for repair until the 13 August.
– In the coming days the wind potential seems to be moving at low levels and supply is expected only from photovoltaics during the morning and noon hours..
– The damages in the Koumoundourou KYT have been fully repaired and the substation has been strengthened.
– The system is in Emergency, as in prolonged heat conditions the issue of equipment durability is raised and the chances of fire increase.
– IPTO is in constant contact with the Fire Service and the Operations Center for timely notification, coordination and response in the event of fire near system components.
– Measures recommended to be taken by IPTO are:
- Operation of the interrupt mechanism and
- Trying to find emergency energy (emergency) by neighbors and non-managers.
HEDNO executives informed about the actions taken by the Administrator regarding the risk of prolonged high temperatures. The damages that occurred in the cables mainly of Attica are due to the increased soil temperature, which together with their charge led their operation to their thermal limits. HEDNO has set 24-hour watch shifts with company staff and contractors, so that any damage can be repaired as soon as possible as stated by ΑΠΕ ΜΠΕ.
In relation to the gas system, DESFA executives informed that the situation in terms of gas availability does not seem to cause any concern, since the tanks of Revythousa are at the highest levels of fullness and there is a planned load for the 4 August.
In addition to the high availability of gas at the Revythousa LNG Facility, for the next period there are no scheduled maintenance works in the National Natural Gas System (ΕΣΦΑ) and upstream Connected Gas Transmission Systems, which would limit the capacity at the Entry Points of the NSRF (Holy Triad, New Noon, Sidirokastro and Gardens).

The cements in Athens caught fire - Images with a thermal camera from above
Drone flights over the Acropolis and Omonia Square using a thermal camera were performed by the Up Stories team in collaboration with meteo.gr on Sunday 1 August 2021 recording the unprecedented temperatures in our country.
As the heat wave that is hitting the whole country is in full swing, the phenomenon of the Urban Thermal Island is becoming more and more intense every day, especially in Athens!
In the shots from the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis the ground temperature was locally above them 55 Celsius degrees (deep red and white), as in the historic center of Athens, in Omonia Square.
At the same time the air temperature according to the meteorological stations of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr in the center of Athens was between 36-37 Celsius degrees.
The highest temperature values were recorded on the asphalt and on the roofs of old buildings with air conditioning units (over 60 degrees Celsius), and the lowest prices on the facades of new buildings and the new fountain in Omonia Square (to 35 Celsius degrees).
Hardalias: Because the difficult days begin when the heat is over
He talked about difficult days that will start when the heat is over the Undersecretary of Civil Protection and Crisis Management, Nikos Hardalias, during an interview with ERT1. "Difficult days are not just hot days. For us, the difficult days begin when the heat wave ends with the drought that will have been created and all,What does this mean. Therefore, we have several weeks of alarm ahead of us, readiness, vigilance. Understand that there is fatigue. Everything is analyzed day by day and we try every day to update our plans according to the meteorological data., which come to us ", said Mr.. Hardalias.
Asked if there is concern for PPC and IPTO, as in the next few hours there will be a large consumption of electricity, replied that there are successive meetings for this piece and all involved are on full alert. "The competent minister, K. Σκρέκας, made a meeting about it yesterday and today. We try for the best. The degree of readiness is very high. "The whole state mechanism is ready if it is necessary to provide solutions where the problems will arise.", write down.
Regarding the fires, The Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management announced that in the last 48 hours we had 116 fires and added that the great battle, the last, is in Rhodes. "It was a difficult night. The current was gradually restored to 99% of the island approximately in 1:30 at midnight. The ground forces worked very hard. Right now the fronts are in recession, we have a point there, in a ravine between the Air Force radar and Maritsa airport, that is, where the fire started. A great battle is being fought, forces are already being strengthened there, In the next two or three hours, forces will arrive from Athens that have left since last night and have been reinforced on foot., from Thessaloniki, Samos to be able to cope with a fire as difficult as the weekend fires ", he stressed.
On the issue of fire prevention, Mr.. Hardalias said that for the past two years they have completely changed their doctrine and approach on this issue. "By law 4622 we provided those tools to Civil Protection, so that he does not wait when the professors’ competent authorities will proceed with the necessary clean-ups and prevention projects but to intervene where it deems, without being its absolute competence. With the program “Dryades” in 18 parts of Attica a specific intervention was made, fire-fighting roads were opened, roads were maintained, the necessary cleanings were done. The big problem in Greece is not who does what, this was described in the general plan that our country has now, him “ΙΟΛΑΟ”, for fires but also other disasters. The question is whether those in charge can actually carry them out. If they can really prepare the mechanism in time of crisis, if they have the means and the capabilities, to do what they should. This needs an update ", He pointed out and added that by order of the Prime Minister, from September to October, on the agenda of priorities is this issue, so that in the coming months it has been solved with a specific fixed cleaning program every year, with secured resources and secured means. "The logic of the studies that come and go, approvals transferred between the decentralized municipalities and all those involved must be stopped. We are determined. There is a political will to put an end to all these arrhythmias and pathogenesis of decades. ", underlined.
Asked about the reaction time of the competent authorities in the prevention and treatment of forest fires, Mr.. Hardalias replied that "we are in a stage of absolute climate deregulation. "We are talking about a climate threat," he added: "We have prepared the mechanism. Obviously, every day we do our self-criticism, but the degree of shielding of the country is progressing at a very fast pace and now we try every year to have more means. The issue is not just prevention. It is also the readiness, treatment and rehabilitation. These are the four axes that Civil Protection moves with 4662 of the National Mechanism. There is no magic wand to eliminate decades of ankle sprains. We work daily with the stakeholders, we try many times to change the mentality and the way of approaching, how to analyze real data and secure in the country, through the program “Shield”, which is the largest program voted by KYSEA last week. It is the largest investment program, armaments, media, climate change infrastructure, concerning the shielding of the country in the coming years. To provide all the means we need to deal with this climate deregulation ".
