Schools start with them a very different school year. And we will start by clarifying something. It is impossible but completely impossible for schools to remain sterile from coronavirus. It is completely impossible for an activity with so many millions of people moving every day not to be associated with a large or small outbreak of the disease.
So let's do everything in more detail.
The total number of students in the country is approx 1.360.000. Along with kindergartens, the children of the country who will go to some educational structure will be about 1,5 million.
Preschoolers and early school children get a lot of viruses during the year. Studies have calculated from 5 until 15 during the school year.
As you can see, this basically means testing every virus and every fever, every snout and every sore throat at school, we will need this winter over 5 millions of tests for children alone, without including the rest 8,5 millions of population.
To get an idea, 60 millions of tests have been done by the US since the beginning of the epidemic until now.
So your child can get tested for any fever or any virus;
the answer is no. No country can do that.
Your child with a mild clinical picture may have coronavirus;
Of course. The joker, especially in children makes ANY CLINICAL IMAGE. And the worst part is that in too many children the coronavirus does NOT make ANY CLINICAL IMAGE. In a few words, even if we could test for any infection, again we would lose almost half of the children who would have coronavirus and would have no symptoms. also, we must also take into account a percentage, which can reach the 30%, that the molecular test for coronavirus will come out FALSE NEGATIVE and nevertheless our child will have coronavirus.
So what do we do; How to get rid of this very confusing situation;
Things are simpler than they seem.
Our child makes a picture of a virus; Fever, cough, rhinitis, sore throat, but even vomiting and diarrhea;
If so, stay home until you are well. The ministry gives clear instructions on this.
However, because it says a lot, I do it for you just below.
1. If the child takes the test and is positive, then returns at least ten days after the onset of symptoms and is at the same time definitely fever-free.
2. If the test is negative, then it returns if it is definitely a day without fever and the symptoms at the same time have a remission.
In a few words, we do not send a child to school who is feverish, but still coughing loudly.
3. If the child does not take any tests which is the most likely, then the immediately preceding one applies again.
That is, he returns to school, if it is definitely a fever for 24 hours and shows a clear remission of symptoms.
Whether he will do the test or not is something that will depend on many factors, among which will be the classic symptoms that your pediatrician will judge and of course the contact with a known case., but also the general viral load of the area. E.g. If your child has a viral infection and you live in Achaia that has few cases it is completely unlikely that your child has a coronavirus.
Many parents will reasonably ask that the majority of viruses will not be tested and there is theoretically a possibility that the child has a coronavirus.
That's why we keep the child at home, so that on the one hand he recovers, on the other hand, its transmissibility drops a lot.
As I said, NEVER, NEVER the case of someone transmitting is zero even if they have a negative test, as there are very often false negatives. There is no way any behavior or way of dealing with the virus is 100 % safe. And of course there is no way your doctor can tell you safely if you or your child has coronavirus. You can not know for sure even with the test.
So what we all need to understand is that the sick child should be left ALWAYS SACRIFICED AWAY FROM THE ELDERLY.
"Okay, doctor, to keep it home, but I have no other choice. She has to stay with her grandfather ".
If there is no other solution, e.g. you can not get permission and no one else can keep the child, despite the grandparents, then they need to be trained all in use a mask, throughout their contact, to the good space ventilation and in the continuous hand washing.
I would also suggest the following:
Of the two older people, it is preferable for the most to have close contact resistant. That is, whether one should feed or change a baby or toddler who coughs constantly, not to prefer the grandmother, if she has severe COPD or other side effects, but the grandfather, if it is in better general condition. Between two elderly people, Nevertheless, with approximately the same state of health to be preferred for close contact with the child clearly the grandmother, as women are less at risk of the disease. (And yes, dishonorable Biology shows sexism 😀)
In any case, it is better for one of the two to be engaged in close proximity and for the other to do the outside work or those that do not require close contact with the child..
What we need to understand, so the most important thing of all is to minimize as much as possible and if possible to cut completely for this year, our and our children's contact with seniors. Did you see what happened in the nursing home of Asvestochori where the entry of the disease by a single employee has already cost the life in 24 people at the moment.
To understand, only from this nursing home we have almost the 10 % of the dead of the country from coronavirus.
It is important, also, our child to have constant contacts and friends, to make small contact bubbles, so that any viruses disperse them in a limited circle. For this, we do not do better or reduce the guests or avoid children's parties. Next year, to be well, we will celebrate in strings and instruments.
Finishing, we must all understand that this is a very special situation, but from which we will soon emerge. Most likely it is, while the beginning of the school year finds us confused and scared, its end will find us triumphant. Until then, we take care and above all we take care of our elderly. The less exposed, the fewer victims we will have.
So a good school year and its end will find us free.
