ΑΣΟΕΕ: Initiatives that move in three axes - guarding, access, toughening of sentences - the government undertakes to deal with the phenomena of lawlessness in public universities as announced by the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the beginning of the teleconference he had with the Rectors of the country's Universities.
On the occasion of the horrific incident with the Rector of ASOEE and the image of shame presented by the hooded men, the Prime Minister stressed:
Fascism can change colors but it has the same substance
"As we all abhor the image of the hostage Rector, so we have to look at the facts head on. After the punishment of Golden Dawn, the time has come to face the other side of the parastate, of what this time, wearing left face. "Fascism can change colors, but it has the same substance.", stressed Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
"This idiosyncratic fascism, because fascism is irrelevant whether it wears another ideological cloak, it will end. And as Greece enters the third decade of the 21st century, it will not be afraid of these representatives of the parastate and will confront them and finally defeat them. ", added the Prime Minister.
Interventions in three directions
As the Prime Minister stressed, The aim of the government is to take immediate initiatives in three areas:
"First, in the establishment of a body, protection of university institutions. A body that will have special training, will be based in schools, which will take care of the prevention of criminal behavior in the field of universities and when required will seek the assistance of the Police.
The second thing we need to discuss is how to upgrade the overall security measures available to Universities at all levels.. Which measures work and which do not. Control of entry and access to the premises, until lighting, the fences, the use of technical means such as closed circuit monitoring.
And the third concerns the tightening of criminal law for offenses committed in areas of the university community. It goes without saying that until we make the necessary changes, provisions that are already in force should be activated., but they encounter the hesitation or sometimes the fear of those who have to set them in motion. And here is your role, the role of the Rectors, is crucial. The role of teachers and students is also crucial and that is why I am waiting with great interest for your thoughts and suggestions ".
The Minister of Education Niki Kerameos during her intervention analyzed the proposals which, as he said, "Must be adapted to the specificity of each institution", while he stressed that "this disgusting image at the University of Economics mobilizes society even more".
The Minister of Civil Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis stated that the Ministry of Civil Protection in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the academic community will submit a comprehensive plan for the protection of Universities.
Then the President of the Synod of Rectors spoke, Rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Nikos Papaioannou and the Rectors of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Meletios - Athanasios Dimopoulos, of the National Technical University of Athens Andreas Boudouvis, of the Athens University of Economics and Business Dimitrios Bourantonis as well as the President of the National Higher Education Authority (ΕΘΑΑΕ), Pericles Mitkas.
A common point of view was that the proposals submitted were moving in the right direction and that, in addition to cooperating with the state, the mobilization of the majority of the academic community, to end the lawlessness. They said, however, that improvement steps had been taken compared to the past.
