The Department of Veterinary Medicine of Kozani, informs the breeders of P.E.. Kozani that on 30 July 2020 found the first confirmed case of bluetongue in an area of the Municipality of Eordea, Kozani Regional Unit, while several suspicious cases have been reported in other areas for which laboratory testing is already underway..
The disease (due to a virus) mainly affects sheep, who get sick and heavier, the goats with a lighter image but also the cattle that very rarely show symptoms and is transmitted by mosquitoes, which become infected by biting sick animals and then transmitting the virus to healthy animals.
The main clinical symptoms are:
High fever, anorexia, collapse, intense salivation, abundant nasal discharge, inflammation of the mouth, swelling of the head, swelling of the lips and tongue (A characteristic symptom of the disease is the blue tongue, which appears in a small number of cases), θάνατοι και μείωση της παραγωγής.
There is no cure for the disease. How to deal with it includes preventive measures such as: Insect protection measures against mosquitoes with use of appropriate and approved insect repellents in animals and stables, avoiding animals staying outdoors during the afternoon-evening hours when mosquitoes are active and increased surveillance of animal movements.
In case of confirmation of the disease, strict hygienic measures are taken, which include: severe restrictions on the movement of animals (buying and selling, massacres) on all surrounding holdings within a radius determined by the Competent Veterinary Authority.
Επειδή η ασθένεια ήδη προσέβαλε ποίμνιο της Περιφερειακής μας Ενότητας και οι καιρικές συνθήκες λόγω καλοκαιριού ευνοούν την εξάπλωση των κρουσμάτων επισημαίνεται ότι απαιτείται η εγρήγορση και πλήρης συνεργασία όλων των κτηνοτρόφων (ιδίως κατόχων προβάτων) with the local Veterinary Offices, who in any case of animals with suspicious clinical symptoms similar to those mentioned above, they must inform immediately the local Veterinary Authority to investigate the incident, while for each entry or exit of animals from their breeding they must first obtain the relevant permit from the Veterinary Service.
End, It is noted that bluetongue is a disease only sensitive animal species (sheep and goats and cattle ), not transmitted to humans, or by direct contact with sick animals, either by eating meat or dairy products, therefore does not pose a threat to Public Health.
